On Saturday 4 June, the Groningen student choir Gica will give its long-awaited lustrum concert in the Martinikerk in Groningen, in celebration of the association’s 55th anniversary. You can order your tickets here.
Under the direction of conductor David van Roijen, the choir will not only perform Purcell’s moving opera, but also stage it. Enhanced by an instrumental ensemble, Gica interprets the tragic love story of the Trojan prince Aeneas and the Carthaginian queen Dido, a timeless tale that has its origin in the ancient epic of the Roman poet Virgil. All aspects of life are covered in the work: from complete surrender and eternal fidelity to endless sorrow and deep mourning, from the light and cheerful sailor song ‘Come away, fellow sailors’ to Dido’s heartrending lament ‘When I am laid in earth’ .
C.S.G. Gica is an open and enthusiastic student choir that organizes many other fun activities in addition to semi-annual concerts.
